Go-Kart Racing Family Photos at Brockville Speedway: A Day in the Fast Lane

This was my very first go-kart racing family photo session and wow, what a blast! From start to finish, I was completely lit up by the energy, the kids, the sunshine, and the genuine joy of being outside together. There’s something so special about seeing kids being kids—racing, cheering each other on, playing in the dirt between laps, and just soaking up every bit of golden-hour goodness. I met the loveliest families, all there to support and celebrate their little racers, and the good vibes were absolutely contagious.


We photographed between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., which meant we got to enjoy the best light of the day. As the sun started to dip toward the horizon, it bathed the track in that soft, magical glow every photographer dreams of; perfect for capturing those candid, heartwarming family moments and dramatic race shots.


In this blog, I’m sharing the full experience: why I loved photographing go-kart racing families at Brockville Speedway, some of my favourite images and moments, the technical side of how I approached this shoot, and tips for any other families who might be thinking about booking their own session. Whether your kiddo races every Wednesday or just wants a fun memory at the track, this one’s for you.

Why the Speedway Makes the Perfect Backdrop for Family Photography


Brockville Speedway is so much more than just a racetrack, it’s a vibrant hub of community, energy, and storytelling. When I arrived, I could immediately tell that this place was made for capturing memories. The setting itself is full of visual drama: wide open straights, tight corners, and vibrant splashes of colour from the go-karts, gear, and signage. There are crowds cheering around the track, kids zipping past with absolute determination on their faces, and families huddled in the field for quick tune-ups and pep talks. Every direction offered a new moment to capture.


What made this session especially heartwarming was the sense of camaraderie. These families weren’t just there for competition, they were there to support their kids, to connect, and to enjoy the experience. Some parents were seasoned pros and knew everybody, some were from far away and didn't know many, but everyone shared in the collective excitement of the day. From a photographer’s perspective, it was a dream! Natural interactions, big emotions, and a setting that offered endless possibilities for storytelling.

Capturing the Emotional Core of Racing Families



Sure, racing is fast-paced and adrenaline-filled, but what I loved most were the quiet, emotionally rich moments in between. Like a parent kneeling down to adjust a helmet strap and offer a few final words of encouragement. Or the way kids would glance back over their shoulders looking for a thumbs-up before the race started. These micro-moments spoke volumes about the love, trust, and support within these families.


One of my favourite images came just before a race began. As a young boy was gearing up for his turn to take off down the track, his little brother ran up and pressed his head against his brother's helmet. He then squatted down beside the kart in a sweet, pure moment of brotherly love. To say I melted would be an understatement.


Photography like this is all about anticipating those in-between beats. Not just focusing on the action, but on the human connections behind it. Kids concentrating at the starting line. Parents watching anxiously from behind the fence. Siblings racing each other in the grass while they wait their turn. It all matters. It all tells the story.

A Peek Behind the Lens: My Approach to This Session


For the gear lovers out there, let’s talk shop. I brought along my trusty Canon 5D Mark III (I've since upgraded to a Canon R6 Mark II), paired with a 24–70mm f/2.8 and a 70–200mm f/4 lens. The former gave me flexibility to grab wide shots of the setting or get close to the action, while the latter helped isolate subjects during races and candid moments without having to get too close and interrupt anything.


Lighting played a huge role in this session, especially as we moved into golden hour. Early in the evening, the light was a bit harsh, so I made sure to use shaded areas or backlight the kids to avoid squinting and create soft separation. As the sun dipped lower, everything turned dreamy. The track lit up in golden tones, shadows stretched long across the pavement, and every little dust cloud caught the light in magical ways.


I worked with fast shutter speeds (1/500 sec and up) to freeze motion, bumped ISO slightly as the sun went down, and kept my aperture between f/2.8 and f/5.6 depending on the focal length and scene. I also used continuous autofocus to track movement. This was especially handy with excited little racers darting around unpredictably!


What mattered most though wasn’t the gear or settings, it was creating an atmosphere where the kids felt comfortable and the parents felt seen. I made sure to chat with the kids before I started snapping, let them show me their karts, and treated the session more like playtime than a formal shoot. That relaxed energy shines through in the photos.

Favourite Moments and Standout Shots



As much as I loved capturing the high-speed action on the track, some of my absolute favourite moments from this session happened in the quiet pockets of time between races, when the helmets came off, the engines cooled down, and the kids just got to be kids.


All around the field, there was this beautiful, carefree energy. Every time I looked up, there seemed to be a game of football or catch starting up. No one was orchestrating it, it just happened. One kid would throw a ball, another would jump in, and suddenly a half-dozen kids were running around in their racing suits, laughing like they had nowhere else in the world to be. It reminded me how little it takes to create joy when you’re surrounded by your people and the sun is shining.


One of the sweetest moments I caught was when a small group of kids ducked into one of the kart trailers for a break from the heat. It was still warm, but they huddled around an iPad together, totally transfixed, watching funny videos and sharing snacks. There was something really nostalgic about it. This moment of rest and connection, tucked away from the chaos outside. It wasn’t a posed photo, but those kinds of real-life pauses always end up being some of my favourites.


And then there were the girls. Two non-racers who decided to make the most of golden hour and turn the track into their own personal photo studio. They came up with their own poses, switched between silly and sassy in a heartbeat, and giggled their way through the entire impromptu photoshoot. I snapped too many frames to count of course, but mostly I just loved watching them hype each other up and fully lean into the moment. It was pure magic.


These little slices of life; kids being playful, creative, goofy, and free, are what make sessions like this so special to me. Yes, the racing is awesome. But it’s these unscripted, in-between scenes that tell the whole story. And honestly? They’re the ones that stick with me the longest.
